Izmir Free Zone (İZBAŞ), one of Izmir's most important production and export centers, attracts the attention of investors with its environmentally friendly, nature- and human-respecting production.

The İZBAŞ Wastewater Treatment Plant, which treats all domestic and industrial wastewater from production facilities operating in the Free Zone using advanced biological techniques, analyzes the discharged water twice a month by accredited laboratories.

The analysis results from independent laboratories accredited to the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change's Central Laboratory Determination System (MELBES) are shared with all relevant institutions, primarily the Ministry's units.

H. Gürsel Bahçıvancılar, General Manager of İZBAŞ İzmir Free Zone Founder and Operator Inc., stated that the Wastewater Treatment Plant, which meets all national and international standards, has treated water samples taken from its Sampling Point by accredited laboratories at certain intervals throughout the year, both with and without prior notice.

FULL MARKS FOR DISCHARGE QUALITY

Bahçıvancılar stated that in all samples taken during 2025, values ​​well below the limits given in Table 19 of the Water Pollution Control Regulation were achieved for all basic parameters such as Suspended Solids (SS), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), pH, and Heavy Metals, indicating that the discharge quality of the facility complies with all relevant regulations and achieves a sustainable environmental success.

Bahçıvancılar emphasized that foreign investors wishing to invest in Turkey attach great importance to environmental standards in investment areas, especially in wastewater treatment plants, and made the following assessment:

“All companies we meet with for investment purposes, whether domestic or foreign-owned, want to see the compliance of our region with environmental standards and request our official analysis results. This provides them with an additional advantage in the financing of their investments.

As İZBAŞ, a company with 41 years of production and 28 years of free zone experience, we share our analysis results not only with potential investors but also with all institutions that request them. We believe that all organizations, especially local governments, should adopt this transparency.”

FIRST FACILITY TO DRY TREATMENT SLUDGE WITH SOLAR ENERGY IS AT İZBAŞ

The Solar Sludge Drying Facility operating within the İzmir Free Zone (İZBAŞ) is preferred as one of the lowest-cost processes for the disposal of waste sludge from wastewater treatment plants. At the facility, the water content in the sludge is reduced using solar energy, resulting in a 50% reduction in total volume and waste amount.

The facility, which is the first and only one of its kind among the 20 free zones in Turkey, offers a sustainable contribution to the environment and nature through energy savings resulting from reduced disposal costs.

İZBAŞ General Manager Gürsel Bahçıvancılar stated that the facility is designed to dry 15 tons of sewage sludge, which contains 25% dry matter, to 50% dryness per day.

Noting that the facility consists of two solar drying halls, each measuring 1,350 square meters, and has an automatic control system that monitors internal and external air conditions, Bahçıvancılar said, “Our main goal in establishing the facility is to evaporate the moisture in the sludge as quickly as possible. With our drum drying system, the sludge is continuously mixed, and we continuously expose the wet sludge to dry air that has not yet reached saturation, drying it until the dry matter content reaches 50%.”
