The İzmir Free Zone (İZBAŞ), one of İzmir’s leading industrial zones in production and exports, has once again become a clustering hub for renewable energy equipment manufacturing. Production of wind turbine blades, which had been suspended following the closure of the TPI Composites factory last September, has resumed. German energy giant Nordex began production in April at Europe’s largest blade manufacturing facility.

Commenting on the investment, Eyüp Sevimli, Chairman of the Board of İZBAŞ İzmir Free Zone Founder and Operator Inc., emphasized that Türkiye, which increased its installed wind power capacity by 2,141 Megawatts (MW) in 2025 to 16,000 MW, ranked second among European countries, after Germany, for new installed capacity commissioned.

GERMAN GIANT NORDEX AT İZBAŞ

Recalling that İzmir accounts for the highest share, with 2,308 MW of Türkiye’s installed wind power capacity, which exceeds 15,000 MW, Sevimli noted that the city is one of the world’s leading production centers, with more than 25 years of experience in turbine blade manufacturing.

Recalling that the İzmir Free Zone, one of Türkiye’s most important clustering centers for renewable energy equipment manufacturing, hosts Europe’s largest blade manufacturing facility, Sevimli said they were pleased that production had resumed following the closure last September of the TPI Composites factory, which began operations at İZBAŞ in 2017.

İZMİR’S BLADE PRODUCTION FELL TO ZERO

İZBAŞ Chairman of the Board Eyüp Sevimli made the following assessment:

“For many years, it was a rightful source of pride for all of us that all four turbine blade factories operating in Türkiye were located in our city. All of these factories closed within a year and a half, and İzmir unfortunately fell to zero almost overnight.

As İZBAŞ, we were also home to Europe’s largest blade manufacturing facility. Following the unfortunate closure of TPI, restarting production that had been thrown into uncertainty; creating jobs and livelihoods for our people; and generating production, employment and exports were also our greatest expectations as İZBAŞ. As İZBAŞ, we tried to provide every contribution we could to the participant company that owns the factory, within the limits of our legal responsibilities. With this factory, specifically designed for turbine blade production, once again serving the same purpose, a national asset has been brought back to life. It was also a source of happiness for us that the process concluded positively after an eight-month hiatus and that the factory resumed production. We should say that one of the main factors in Nordex’s choice of İZBAŞ was its proximity to the city center and labor resources, and the ease of integration with the logistics infrastructure. We welcome Nordex to the İZBAŞ family.”

NORDEX ACCOUNTS FOR ONE THIRD OF

THE POWER PLANTS IN TÜRKİYE

Recalling that Türkiye is a country with ambitious targets in wind energy, Sevimli noted that installed capacity, currently at around 16,000 MW, is expected to nearly triple to 45,000 MW by the end of 2035. Drawing attention to the importance of supporting this growth with domestic manufacturing in equipment production, Sevimli stated that they hoped the other blade factories closed in İzmir would also restart as soon as possible.

Pointing out that turbine manufacturers have played a decisive role in the development of Türkiye’s wind energy sector and in making the market more dynamic and competitive, Eyüp Sevimli stated that German energy company Nordex, which has begun production at İZBAŞ, has a 34 percent share of Türkiye’s wind power plants with 5,378 MW of installations.

Sevimli added that, as of 2026, in the installation of wind power plants totaling 3,439 MW that are currently under investment, Nordex holds the leading position with 2,069 MW of capacity and a 60 percent market share.
